LIBERTY BELL 7

LIBERTY BELL 7:
The Peril and Promise of Space Exploration

“...The conquest of spaceis worth the risk of life.”

— Gus Grissom; NASA astronaut, Liberty Bell 7, Gemini 3 and Apollo 1

The Space Race and the ultimate United States’ victory in reaching the Moon began with spacecraft designed for one human. The Liberty Bell 7 is one of those spacecraft. The story of its mission, and its recovery after 38 years on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean, is fascinating.

Using the actual Liberty Bell 7 spacecraft as its foundation, this exhibit sheds light on how America’s first astronauts were selected and how they prepared for the unknowns of travel to space.

Understanding the past and the critical first steps that eventually led to footprints on the Moon inspires a greater understanding of today’s space exploration and the wonder that will lead us into the future.

VISITORS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN:

• How the Space Race began and the evolution of U.S. Human Space Exploration

• The men (and women) who successfully passed a grueling selection process to be the first U.S. Citizens in space

• The incredible story of the Liberty Bell 7—its loss and, more important, its dramatic recovery and restoration from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean

• How the Mercury capsules compared to the Soviet Vostok, the spacecraft that carried the first man, Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, into space

• What lessons learned by the early pioneers of space exploration are relevant to the efforts of NASA and private space exploration companies today

• The story of Gus Grissom, the highly regarded Astronaut and test pilot selected for three critical early space flights, including the Liberty Bell 7.

• The story of the Mercury 13—the women pilots who also passed the requisite training but were not considered for the NASA program.
